So many people think game masters have the coolest job, and we won’t lie, it is really cool! But when you’re visiting Escape Games Canada to play a game and have some fun, it’s easy to overlook the peculiarities of what we really do. If you’ve ever wondered why game masters always seem so happy, or are always laughing, it’s because we have a blast at work! Here are just some of the details of what it’s really like to work at an escape room.
We spend hours together
The truth is our shifts are long, and a lot of that time is spent watching security footage and making sure that everything is running smoothly. Naturally, that quiet time doesn’t stay quiet. We get to know each other very well and have our favourite topics of conversation. Whether we’re talking about anime, video games, the news, or what we did with our time off, game masters have fantastic interpersonal relationships with all their peers from all the time they spend bonding.
The cameras are not as funny as you think
Yes, we are watching the security feeds of our escape rooms. No, watching customers play or get scared is not very funny. On your first day on the job, the cameras are a novelty. They’re exciting and interesting, but they can also be confusing until you get used to the strange perspectives. Most of the game masters at Escape Games Canada have been here for a while, so the camera footage has lost its allure. That is until one of our coworkers does something ridiculous. Inevitably, if a staff member embarrasses themselves on camera, the team is all over it.
Shenanigans
The most overlooked part of being a game master is the pranks. Because of our familiarity with our facility, we know every possible hiding place. If you work here, there’s a good chance that you’ll get spooked by your coworkers on a regular basis. Our team are infamous for concocting elaborate new ways to surprise one another. It’s not for the faint of heart. Some days are calmer than others, but one thing is for certain: When you start your shift, it’ll be full of laughs.
